STORAGE TANK VENT DRIERS
Use a DRIERITE Vent Drier to prevent condensation or absorption of water vapor by a material in a storage tank. All DRIERITE Vent Driers have a sight glass window with Indicating DRIERITE to tell you when the drier is exhausted.
Applications
- Guards sensitive materials against moisture
- Protects tanks, pumps and pipelines from corrosion by condensed water vapor
- Prevents biological growth by keeping out water
- Prevents contamination of valuable liquids by corrosive sludge
- Dries air to -100° F dewpoint or 2 ppm by weight
The moisture remaining in gases dried with DRIERITE at 25° - 30° C is 0.005 mg./liter, (data verified by the National Bureau of Standards). Air is dried to a dew point of -100° F. Organic liquids are dried to the low ppm range. There is little change in efficiency at temperatures up to 100° C.
Capacity
Condensation or absorption of water vapor by a material in a storage
vessel can be prevented by the installation of one of these drying
columns in the vent piping. When the material in a storage vessel is
removed, the moisture laden air replacing the material is completely
dried by the desiccant column in the vent line. Breathing through the
vent line occurs daily from changes in atmospheric pressure and temperature.
These DRIERITE units will prevent contamination from this
source.
These driers will protect storage vessels up to 400,000 gallons. The
drying units will produce dry air (-100° F dewpoint) for flow rates up to
1200 gallons per minute (160 cfm).
The moisture indicator eliminates guesswork; it tells you when the
DRIERITE is exhausted. The glass window has a few ounces of
Indicating DRIERITE behind it. The Indicating DRIERITE turns from
blue to pink when the drier is exhausted. The drier contains the highly
efficient Du-Cal DRIERITE. DRIERITE Storage Tank Vent Driers are
efficient and economical to operate.
Refer to the Technical Data section of this catalog for
information on sizing a Vent Drier.

VENT DRIER SYSTEMS FOR DRUMS AND SMALL TANKS
Disposable Cartridge
This DRIERITE Disposable Desiccant Cartridge (Stock No. 40451) dries displacement air entering storage drums to -100° F dewpoint. It prevents condensation of water vapor and resulting contamination. The indicator window turns from blue to pink when the cartridge is exhausted. When used with the adapters shown here, these cartridges provide economical and versatile means for preventing moisture contamination in drums and small tanks.

Refillable Indicating Vent Drier
This DRIERITE Drier (Stock No. 50068) is an alternative to the disposable cartridge. It is designed for use with the DRIERITE drum adapter (#50001). The clear polycarbonate plastic column is filled with Indicating DRIERITE which provides a visual indication of the extent of desiccant exhaustion. The use of stock No. 26810 Lab Unit Wrenches is recommended for cap removal.
Drum Adapter
The DRIERITE Drum Adapter (Stock No. 50001) provides convenient means for connecting either the disposable cartridge (Stock No. 40451) or the refillable vent drier (Stock No. 50068) to a storage drum. Refer to the Technical Data Section drawing. It is easy to place a vent drier system on any drum. Just install the drum adapter in the bung of the drum. Puncture both ends of the disposable cartridge (or remove plugs from the refillable vent drier). Insert the cartridge (or refillable vent drier) into the rubber hose and tighten the hose clamps. Once installed, material can be withdrawn from the drum without being contaminated with moisture. The Drum Adapter (Stock No. 50001) will thread into either a 2" or a 3/4" bung. The Cartridge Holder (Stock No. 50003) is an alternative to the Drum Adapter and provides a hose barb connection for 1/4" and 3/8" flexible tubing.

SIZING STORAGE TANK VENT DRIERS
The size of the DRIERITE Storage Tank Vent Drier required to protect a storage tank is determined by the amount of air and the rate at which the air enters the storage tank. Generally, the rate at which the air enters the tank is the pump-out rate; however, there are exceptions. A large tank that is nominally empty can have air entering the tank due to temperature and pressure changes faster than the pump-out rate. Fortunately, the amount of air entering the tank usually requires a drier large enough to handle the flow rate. DRIERITE Storage Tank Vent Driers are normally sized to last from one to six months per charge of desiccant. With shorter service cycles, the labor cost becomes prohibitive and, with longer cycles, the capital costs become higher. The size of the drier is determined by the amount of air that enters the tank to replace the liquid that has been removed from the tank, and the amount of air that enters the tank due to atmospheric pressure and temperature changes. A tank that averages half full for a month will breathe 60% of its volume per month with a 20° F temperature change from day to night. Each 10° F increase or decrease in the temperature differential adds or subtracts another 30% to the volume. As an example, a 10,000 gallon tank that is 3/4 full at the beginning of the month and 1/4 full at the end of the month would breathe approximately 6,000 gallons per month with a 20° temperature change per day. Add this to the 5,000 gallons of liquid removed from the tank, and the total breathing of the tank is approximately 11,000 gallons of air. Figure one shows that the DRIERITE Model 105 Storage Tank Vent Drier has a capacity of 30,000 gallons of air at 80° F and 80% RH. This drier will last about three months under these conditions. The Model 1100 will last twice as long. The instantaneous pump-out rate should not exceed the maximum pump out rate for the drier, nor should it exceed the design pump-out rate for more than thirty minutes. If it does, the next size larger drier should be used.

NOTES:
- Material - mild steel
- Max Working Pressure - 50 p.s.i.g.
- Max Flow Rate - 15 scfm at 25 p.s.i.g.
- Desiccant Capacity- 65 lbs. of Du-Cal Drierite, 4 mesh
- 5. 3/4" NPT inlet and outlet
INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
- Thread the 2" bushing on the adapter into large bung or remove the 2" bushing and thread the 3/4" pipe into the small bung.
- Puncture both ends of the cartridge. The holes should be rather large to reduce pressure drop. If the #50068 is used, remove plastic plugs from bottom and side of vent.
- Insert cartridge into rubber hose and tighten hose clamp.
Cartridge should be replaced after indicating window
turns from blue to pink.
If the drier is exposed to weather, the unit should be
installed so that the cartridge points down to prevent liquid
water from entering the exposed end.
